I WON A CONTEST

I was delighted to win the Christmas caption contest jointly sponsored by Penady Secrets and artist Mick John. These are the beautiful art prints produced by Mick which will soon be arriving at my door, on canvas. The picture of Sasha is taken from her 7th birthday photo, in a Textured Expressive Brushed Oil Paint Effect and the one of Honey is from one of the first photos I took when she first arrived two weeks ago and is in a Textured Oil Paint Effect.
Big thanks to Mick for his help and patience in helping me to select the best possible artistic finishes for my prize selections.

The two prize selections will soon be on their way to me, produced on canvas, ready to hang on the wall at home.

This was such a great surprise and I am over the moon to have actually won something not actually connected to my books.

A REVIEW OF SHEBA
5.0 out of 5 stars Sheba, rescued from Hell
By HZ on 26 November 2017
Format: Kindle Edition

Sometimes, man’s cruelty never ceases to amaze me. Training dogs to fight for human ‘amusement’ is bad enough, but stealing and using people’s loved and innocent pets to use as bait in order to train the fighting dogs is much worse. Poor Sheba was one such dog, used and abused, starved, beaten and tied up to be attacked as ‘training’ for the fighters. Just how cruel can people get? Near death, this poor dog was thrown away like a piece of trash on a rubbish tip, a living skeleton, and left to die. Somehow she was found, rescued and despite being close to death the author and his wife made it their priority to save this little dog and return her to health and a happy life. How they did it is beautifully described in Mr. Porter’s book, in which he doesn’t seek to dodge the mistakes they made along the way in trying to rehabilitate a dog that had been so cruelly abused, which adds to the poignancy of this excellent book. Needless to say, ‘Project Sheba’ was a resounding success and ten years later, Sheba is still with the Porter family, a much loved and loving, family dog.
I recommend this book not only to dog lovers but to anyone who enjoys reading about the ability of man to overcome difficulties as the Porters did in loving and caring for this dog, who most people thought would be dead within weeks of them rescuing her. I defy anyone, man or woman, to read this book without feeling a lump in your throat or a tear in your eye. The photos in the book are a testament to the great job the family did in restoring Sheba to health and happiness. Long may she live and enjoy her life with Mr, Porter, his family and their wonderful pack of rescue dogs.
SHEBA; FROM HELL TO HAPPINESS
Sheba is the sequel to Brian L Porter's award-winning bestseller, Sasha, and tells the story of rescue dog Sheba, Sasha’s best friend, starved, beaten and used as bait for the training of fighting dogs and then thrown on a rubbish tip and left to die, a barely living skeleton.
The author and his wife adopted this unfortunate waif and so began a long period of recuperation and training, as they gradually helped Sheba back to full health and helped her to learn to live sociably and happily within their pack of rescue dogs.
A story of real triumph over adversity, full of emotion and a fair amount of humor too, Sheba’s is a real-life tale of what can be achieved in rehabilitating a dog, having suffered a living hell, from the brink of death to a life full of happiness.

A REVIEW OF A MERSEY MARINER
on 24 October 2017
This man is a brilliant author with traits of Agatha Christie, Alistair MacLean, and all the best British crime writers. This book holds your attention from the start and weaves its way through one twist after another. As I was reading it I mentally posited several endings - all were wrong, of course! Like the previous novel, A Mersey Maiden, this book has major international links and twists that make it so much more than a simply good crime novel.
Brian is a master at developing his characters and you really feel as though you personally know all of the key players - must have a pint with them next time I am in Liverpool. Sad about Andy Ross (Brian Porter!) being an Everton supporter, but I suppose we are all aloud a few errors of judgement!
Read this book! Read all four of Brian's books and keep pestering him to write more (two are in the pipeline)!

A MERSEY MARINER
DEATH ARRIVES ON THE MORNING TIDE.

The aging cargo liner Alexandra Rose steams into the Mersey Estuary, enveloped in thick fog that delays her entry into the port of Liverpool. When one of the ship’s passengers is found dead in his cabin, a chain of events is set in motion that leads to one of Detective Inspector Andy Ross’s most baffling and complicated cases to date.

The first death is soon followed by another, and Ross discovers that his case has its roots in the depths of the Amazonian Rainforest in Brazil. A billionaire entrepreneur, passengers who may not be exactly who or what they say they are, a team of medical researchers and a team of vicious mercenaries combine to confound and complicate what begins as a simple death aboard a nondescript and insignificant ship.

Ross and his team from the Merseyside Police Specialist Murder Investigation team need all their skills in order to solve the case of the ‘Mersey Mariner.’

A CHRISTMAS INTERVIEW WITH SUSIE BALLINGER

I was recently asked to to participate in a short interview for Christmas with blogger Bookworm 1977 aka Susie Ballinger. It was published today on her blog at Book Reviews and Much More and here are my answers to Susie's 5 Christmas questions:

Christmas Question Time

On the 1st of December, we will bring you the last edition for this year of question time with the authors.
Here are the questions we asked the authors.
Do you consider yourself a Christmas Grinch or do you see yourself as Mr. or Mrs. Claus?
Would the people know you best disagree or agree with your answer?
What do you like best about Christmas?
What books are you hoping to find in your Christmas stocking this year?
What is your favorite Christmas song or Christmas Carol and why?
What was the best Christmas present you ever received as a child?
Which Christmas character from literature would you like to have as a house guest this Christmas and why?
Thank you to all authors who have taken part in question time and may I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Authors Answers

Answers to your questions.
1. I'm definitely Mr. Claus where my wife Juliet is concerned. I love to buy her something really special for Christmas and also like to place lots of little presents under the tree as Christmas day surprises. I was brought up to see Christmas as a time for giving, not receiving, so I do tend to be a Grinch when it comes to certain people who seem to think Christmas is all about what they want for themselves and don't think about others. This sadly includes certain younger members of my own family who don't seem to realise what the original Christmas story was about. The three wise men came bearing gifts, not expecting to receive anything in return. Those who know me will expect nothing less than the answer I just gave you.
2. I love the feeling of peace and quiet that seems to hang in the air on Christmas morning, when the shops are all closed, the streets are quiet and for a short time at least, the world seems to be at peace.
3. Rather than one particular book I would love to receive an Amazon gift card or even five or ten pounds in an envelope so that I can trawl through the books on sale at Amazon. It's amazing how many cheap good reads you can find on the Amazon website. So even five pounds could get me five 99p thrillers to read on the dark winter nights.
4. My favourite Christmas song is the carol, Silent Night. Not only does it sum up the meaning of Christmas for me, but as an ex-servicemen, it reminds me of the Christmas truce that took place in the trenches during the first World War when the fighting stopped for a short time and the British and German troops exchanged gifts and played football together before the truce ended and they returned to the madness of the war. Apparently the truce was triggered by the German troops being heard singing Silent Night, (originally written in German), and the British joined in the singing and one thing led to another, until their officers met in no-mans land and the unofficial truce began.
5. My favourite Christmas present as a child was undoubtedly the railway layout I received when I was ten years old. It was amazing, with various tracks, stations, landscapes etc and two fantastic new electric trains, one passenger and one freight train. It gave me hours and hours of pleasure for years to come until the time came when I left home to join the Royal Air Force. I carried on adding items to it over the years from my pocket money until it had more trains, trees, tunnels, level crossings and a road system with cars and buses etc. My Mum and Dad didn't have much money back then, and as young as I was I realised they must have saved up all year to buy me that most fantastic and treasured present.
6. I'd love to have poor Nancy, from Oliver Twist as my guest for Christmas dinner. Though she had nothing and was a downtrodden and extremely poor person from the lowest echelon of society, controlled and beaten by the evil Bill Sikes, and undoubtedly sent out to sell herself on the streets of Victorian London, Nancy had a big heart and came to love and care for Oliver, ding her best to protect him from Sikes's violence. I would love to be able to give her one day of enjoyment, and good food and company, away from the degradation of her life with Sikes and Fagin.

DREAMS CAN COME TRUE - CHARLI'S STORY

DREAMS CAN COME TRUE - CHARLI'S DAY WITH US
Today, December 4th, was the day when Sasha and Sheba's #1 fan, 11 year old Charli, and her Mum came to visit, having flown over from Ireland yesterday. Charli had written two wonderful reviews of both Sasha and Sheba's books earlier this year and had expressed a wish to meet the dogs as her greatest birthday wish. i managed to track her family down through Amazon and Facebook, hoping to help make this little girl's dream come true. I had no idea at that time that Charli lives in Antrim n Northern Ireland. Imagine my surprise when her Mum, Marie, contacted me, and said she would fly over with Charli as a special treat for her, and today, the day finally arrived.
We all had a lovely time with Charli and Marie, and Charli got on great with Sasha, Sheba and all the dogs, and brought them some lovely treats for Christmas too, as well as presents for me and Juliet. I won't reveal what we gave Charli as she hasn't opened them yet. Here's a few photos from our time together.
I'm just so happy that we were able to make this beautiful little girl's dream come true. I hope she enjoyed her time with us as much as we enjoyed her being here, and I know Sasha and Sheba loved going for a walk with me Carli and her Mum, what I think was possibly the highlight of her day.
Charli, we love you. xxxxxxx

Here are the reviews that Charli wrote on Amazon after she'd read the books:
